Special Event

To commemorate the publication of the new
Bedrock Geologic Map of New Hampshire
and to honor the indispensable role that our
distinguished late colleague and friend, John Lyons,
has played in New England Geology, the
Earth Sciences Department at Dartmouth College
will host a special evening lecture at 7:00 PM on
Friday, April 23, 1999, in room 105 Dartmouth Hall
followed by a reception in room 101 Fairchild Hall
on the Dartmouth College campus in Hanover, NH.

Dr. Eugene Boudette, New Hampshire State Geologist
and a close friend, colleague and student of John's
will present a talk entitled "New Hampshire's Place
in the Northern Appalachian Orogen"

The faculty invite all interested to come and
share memories of John.

NHGS News and Events

The 1999 NHGS Spring Meeting will be on Thursday, April 8 (see notice above). A Field Trip to the Silver Lake Fault Zone in the Merrimack-Hollis area, to be led by Greg Kirby, is scheduled for Saturday, July 17. The Annual Family outing--this year a cruise on the MV Mount Washington--is scheduled for Saturday, August 14. The Society's Annual Meeting will be Thursday, October 7. Mark these dates on your 1999 calendar now!

The NHGS Board of Directors will be meeting on the first Monday of every third month for the rest of the year--May 3rd, August 2, and November 1.

Future Meetings of the NH Council of Professional Geologists (NHCPG) are set for April 7, May 5, and June 2--5:30 pm at the NHDES offices on Hazen Drive in Concord. A copy of the Proposed Legislation for the registration of professional geologists is available on the web at: www.state.nh.us/gencourt/bills/99bills/sb0181.html You can follow the status by going to www.state.nh.us and clicking on the "status of bills" section.

The Spring Meeting of the Vermont Geological Society, featuring the presentation of student papers, will be on Saturday, April 17. Contact Steve Wright (swright@zoo.uvm.edu) for more information.

We hope to pursue this goal by contributing to public education, strengthening the role of geology in environmental concerns, and disseminating knowledge about the geology of the Granite State. Membership in the society is open to all, including professional geologists in all areas and interested lay people.
